" CURSE YOU BAYLE . I HEARBY VOW ! YOU WILL RUE THIS DAY ! BEHOLD , A TRUE DRAKE WARRIOR ! AND I , IGON ! "

Elden Ring : Shadow of the Erdtree represents FromSoftware at the height of their power as a developing team , and that is overwhelmingly cleared to see , but it ’s not sodding . ( Be warn , for there be light spoiler ahead . )

The World of Shadow of the Erdtree

The human beings space of Shadow of the Erdtree itself is by far my favored part of this DLC , and by far the greatest play orbit FromSoftware has ever create ; the Shadowed Lands are beautiful in way I could n’t even commence to envisage , and struggle to describe . My first few minutes had my jaw on the floor , with that soft but permeative darkness of the Gravesite Plain and the removed glow of the Scadutree . Then eventually I came across locations such as theCerulean Coastwith those stretching horizons of the sweetest blue , the Jagged Peak with bring down drop and oppressive heat , and the scurvy repugnance of the Abyssal Woods . Youfeelthe locations in the DLC just as much as you see them , and that is nothing but a full triumph for FromSoftware .

This is all without even discussing the fact that these locations are filled with dungeons , colonization , ruins , and secret just waiting to be found . Dungeons cope to be distinct from the stem plot , whilst maintaining their conversant charm . Whether it ’s the stale chill of rather uncomfortable lore Apocalypse inBonny Gaol , or the nigh industrial flavor to the Forges , every location manages to have its own alone indistinguishability whilst keeping in lineage with the oecumenical theme of the area . And yeah , it’stotallybigger than Limgrave .

Elden Ring was beautiful , but Shadow of the Erdtree isinspired .

The Gear

Truthfully , I was a bit implicated about the fresh gear go into the DLC . I genuinely call back that some of the unexampled weapons , armors , and amulet would struggle not only to be memorable , but more importantlyviable . gratefully , my fears were completely unwarranted .

The weapon system variety on offer is frankly ludicrous , with every playstyle being more than catered to . There ’s my personal darling in the Light Greatswords , all of which bring off to be wildly unique to one another . There ’s the Dexterity - focalise Backhand Blades ( the basic one you’re able to determine early on is an absolute mainstay in my equipment ) , and theCirquefor those who enjoy a bit of terpsichore with their wanton murder . And of course there ’s the young Martial Arts , which are so much fun it ’s nigh outlaw . I found myself default on to these whenever I was particularly frustrated , and they were far more effective than I could ’ve imagine . ( particularly when give the Quality affinity . )

Armor genuinely surprise me , as I thought I ’d long since found my forever set . But here FromSoftware have oversee to really mix thing up , offer sets that switch up the stats you ’d expect of given pieces . There ’s full reportage armor which sacrifices protective covering for weight simplification , and a set you may get early on on that massively ramp up the weight in favor of some of the best strong-arm protection possible .

Talismans have filled in some gap left in the foot game ( like the addition of an Arcane boosting talisman ) , but the master focus has been on adding some really unequaled build boosting ones . The Dried Bouquet is a very unique improver for those who focalise on their manipulation of Ash Summons , andRellana ’s Cameooffers a new style for posture arm user ( like myself ) to give themselves a buff .

There ’s far too many of all of these various particular for me to mention them all , but I ’ve yet to find anything which made me think’meh ' , so top crisscross from me .

The Bosses

FromSoftware games might be the only 1 in which discourse the gaffer is one of the most of import part of a reexamination . In Shadow of the Erdtree , whilst the bulk of the bosses are solid and some genuinely rotatory , there ’s a few that miss the marker .

The spoiled wrongdoer for me by far was Commander Gaius , who seems like he was crafted with the solitary intention of being as moan cause as possible . His initial bursting charge attack often had me idle before I ’d even finished the fog gate vivification , and summoning a Spirit Ash to divert his grim violation was next to impossible with his ostensibly never ending array of melee and ranged attempt . Torrent was all but useless , so I pass 90 % of the fight chase after after Gaius only to die a ridiculous combo with awful hitboxes . Some other bosses simply lacked that FromSoftware’oomph ' , and had some expert issue of their own ( such as the Scadutree Avatar , which despite being quite easy , is a waste pipe due to its exuberant distance and performance - dropping gaudy attacks ) .

The good however weregood , and absolutely outweighed the badness . Messmer was awe inspiringandimposing in equal bill , with some fantabulous design , a unattackable spokesperson performance ; it was a combat that was both extremely ambitious but completely fair .

Bayle was another rack out with his incredible sports stadium andstunningphase passage , and he is only meliorate further by the addition of Igon , who has taken his spot as my new favourite NPC . Igon adds a level of cinematic drama to the Bayle fight that I ’ve yet to see in Elden Ring at large , with his invariant cheering and inability to die making him seem just as God - like as you .

But the laurels of my favourite of all , despite some critique within the community and the dead overpowering trouble , has to go to the terminal boss . The spectacle of this fight is just something I can not ignore , and it ’ll go down in story as being one of the best FromSoftware have ever done ; the narrative excellency ofwhoI got to face off against absolutely channel the fight for me .

Final Verdict

Elden Ring : Shadow of the Erdtree is an absolutely outstanding improver to one of the good games of the propagation , and provides an extreme but ultimately fair challenge limit against the backdrop of the okay humanity FromSoftware have ever created .

With more activities to do than you could ’ve ever expected , heaps of exciting and wide-ranging new geartrain to acquire and kit yourself out in , and some of the harshest but visually and thematically sensational bosses we ’ve ever seen , it ’s all exceed absolutely every one of my already eminent expectations . With some next patches to fix some of the more technically shaky bosses , and avowedly poor performance in sure area , I have no doubtfulness that Shadow of the Erdtree will remain just as relevant as the original title , and has proven once more that FromSoftware can be trusted to allow for us with experiences absolutely no other developing studio apartment can .
