monster revere me , but I fear the puzzles .
For years , developer have attempt to make a game that captures the essence of the original Alone in the Dark . With the late reimagining of the iconic original , they finally have it in their grasp .
Gameplay
While you could wreak as one or the other , I suggest playing as both Emily and Edward , the two admirer of Alone in the Dark . Depending on which one you choose , you ’ll get dissimilar cutscenes , different chemical element of the story , and some specific puzzler . you may get most of the account from one playthrough , but the biz is really enhanced by playing as both fictitious character because of the many remainder .
Once you take one of the two , you ’ll be able to start explore Derceto , the sanctuary where Emily ’s uncle Jeremy has disappeared . As your first playthrough , I suggest kick the bucket with the niece , Emily , as you look for for her uncle and then picking Edward ( the detective she hired to help ) .

Most of the section at Derceto require unlocking new areas of the sign of the zodiac and solving puzzles to spark the dream sequences ( or memory sequences , as Edward calls them ) . While the house is comparatively safe from all enemy , Jeremy ’s dreams are not . I found myself contend slime ogre from the bayou and escaping the Dark Man to unravel Jeremy ’s mystery .
The fighting aspect of the game was fun but nothing top-notch special . I did savor the numerous melee weapons , even if they broke after only a few hits . It was uproarious to kill all of those goliath with a crucifix . I despaired when I unintentionally blame up a tomahawk , and the game would n’t let me break up up my crucifix again .
The variety of teaser in this game really made for quite a challenge . I in particular like those that involve multiple steps , such as theAstronomical puzzle , with the most fun part being assembling the ornamental plate . Keep in mind that most of the puzzles until the recent plot are the same for both playthroughs , which I found a bit wearisome . The puzzle I was most annoyed with was the safe one at thePretzt shipping society . It has such a simple solvent , but I was really overthinking it .

Overall , the game reminded me a lot of Resident Evil with its puzzles and enemies , but less outright repugnance and more psychological revulsion . This is not surprising , considering Mikael Hedberg write for the game . He is also the writer behind SOMA , one of the best games in that literary genre and one of my pet of all time .

Story
When I started playing the game , I did n’t really wait all of the twists that were coming my way as I was searching for Jeremy and sample to get off Derceto alive . I also did n’t know how significant the changes were going to be in the two characters ' journeys .
I start my first playthrough as Emily , so many of her interactions and responses were as someone who was inclined to know deteriorating black bile , a condition that runs in her family — the same condition that put Jeremy at the Derceto sanctuary . A lot of the time , it feels like Emily is part of the patient patchwork of the manor and not just a visitant .
Once I terminate her story and carry through Jeremy ( though I do n’t know if saved is the correct word for him ) , I was mad to see how precisely Edward was going to react to the foreign occurrence at Derceto , the Dark Man , and being teleported into unlike locations and even dissimilar countries .

The detective has no connexion to Emily ’s family and , as such , no ready self-justification for the weird thing live on around him . And I have to say , I enjoy his side of the story a bit more . For someone who was see monsters bug out up get out and correct , Edward took a lot in stride , but his reactions were more frantic , and his comment was candidly hilarious at time .

Sound Design
The music felt authentic to the era , with malarkey noir melodic line following you throughout the probe . This , along with the optic design , really sell me on the game ’s old - timey aura . The euphony , while console jazz in steady situations , actually added to the tenseness of the investigation when exploring Derceto .
When I adventure outside , the sound design really shine . Although the areas were empty of humans , they were active with the sounds of nature and the unnatural . And , not to spoil much , but whenever there was a variety in locating , the music , along with the outdoor sounds , adjusted perfectly .

The voice play in the plot is also fairly rattling . I sleep with listen to the southern drawl , and it was medicine to my ear whenever the Derceto resident let the cat out of the bag . However , I have to apprise both David Harbour and Jodie Comer , who voiced their part very well . They both had really smashing take on their reference and accents , and the dialog finger very natural throughout the game .

Graphics and Performance
Alone in the Dark looks very authentic to its era , the 1920s , both in terms of the surround and the character design . To me , the most beautifully design moment were the pipe dream chronological succession . They really felt like blurred store , disconnected instant freeze in metre that I could search .
Emily and Edward wait very much like their genuine - life counterparts , but I sleep with Grace ’s figure the most , the little kid patient at Derceto . Honestly , I was expecting her to become an evil mastermind at any point , with how creepy-crawly she was portrayed . The character models were ok , but I did get an uncanny feeling often from them ( not just Grace ) . The big issue for me was the character trend and the eyes . Something was lacking for a plot developed in 2024 .
While the plot overall does look pretty stunning , specially in cinematic preferences , it was n’t all smooth soaring on the bayou . Just like Jeremy ’s steamboat , the game crashed for me a few times , even when I aline it to medium configurations . And with an RTX 4070 , I really was n’t expecting such issue . It was a snatch bothersome take to reiterate some part because of this since I was already playing the game multiple times to get all of the Lagniappe collectibles .

Verdict - A light at the end of a very dark tunnel
The secret plan was n’t perfect , but Alone in the Dark definitely kept me entertained . I love a good Gothic Southern story like this one , with cracking characters , an entertaining enigma , and a sprinkle of psychological repulsion . If you do n’t mind that it stumble a routine along the elbow room , then this is definitely a game you should fit out .
